Opal and Hazel's Wood Fired Pizza Celebrates 1st Anniversary this Friday at Riverside Park Opal & Hazels Wood Fired Pizza began just a year ago, in May of 2020. Scott and Annette Merchant discovered wood-fired pizza for the first time at a fair and absolutely loved it. They said, "For several years after that, we always tried to find wood-fired pizza on vacations or any place else we went."Having already built an outdoor kitchen on their patio, they decided that a wood-fired pizza oven would be a great addition.

VFW Post 8884 offers FREE Breakfast to Veterans and First Responders, May 30

On Sunday, May 30th, the VFW Post 8884 will be offering a FREE breakfast to every Veteran and First Responder. The cost for everyone else will be a freewill donation. Friends of the Center Point Library to hold Book Sale June 11,12

The Friends of the Center Point Library annual Book Sale is Friday, June 11, from 3 to 7, and Saturday, June 12, from 9 to 1:30.  Hardcovers are $1, paperbacks are 50 cents and children's books are 25 cents.  There will be a special sale of collectibles and books from late Library benefactor Marilyn Andersen.

Center Point Historical Society Depot Museum and Log Cabin to be Open

The Center Point Historical Society's Depot Museum/Strait Log Cabin will be open Sundays 2 to 4 beginning June 6.  Museum admission is free.  This year's theme is "School: Town and Country."

Vinton American Legion to hold Memorial Day Program at the Legion

The Vinton American Legion will be holding a Memorial Day Program at the Legion Hall, 105 North  R Ave, at 11:00 AM. The primary speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Constance M. Arens (Retired). She served in the Army Nurse Corp for 21 year at various US Army hospitals, in the states and abroad.Light refreshments will be served.

Shellsburg Memorial Day Service

The Ray & Virginia Boyer Post 166 will host a Memorial Day service at Oakwood Cemetery on Monday, May 31 at 11:00 am.The American Legion 3rd District Tomb of the Unknown float will be on display and will be honoring the 100 year anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown in Arlington VA. Monte Railsback will be the guest speaker. Also on hand will be the Benton County community band.

Kiwanis Park Splash Pad and Playground Ribbon Cutting Saturday, May 29

Kiwanis Park to welcome residents with Grand Opening May 29 The Kiwanis Park will welcome families to the park on Saturday, May 29 with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Grand Opening ceremony which will begin at 11:00 a.m.The Kiwanis Park Splash Pad and Playground has been a project of the Vinton Parks and Recreations Department for the last several months. Following the ceremony at Kiwanis Park, there will be a party following until 1:00 PM featuring DJ Tyler Sean with free burgers and hot dogs prepared by Merchant’s Grilling.

VFW Announces Kick-Off of Annual $30,000 Scholarship Competition

Commander Dale Henry of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Post Smith-Geater Post 8884 and Auxiliary announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition. Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Studets must write and record a three-to-five-minute essay on the [sel]ed theme using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and completed entry form to their local VFW Post by October 31.

CENTER POINT LIBRARY FRIENDS UP TO THEIR NECKS IN USED BOOKS

Friends of the Center Point Library secretary Carolyn Roseberry has been working on bunches and boxes of used books for the upcoming Book Sale. At its May meeting, the Library Friends made final plans for the sale to be held on Friday, June 11, from 3 to 7, and on Saturday, June 12, from 9 to 1:30 in the Library Community Room. The Book Sale was canceled last year because of the pandemic so the supply and [sel]ion of books this year could modestly be called humongous.
